Encounters organised in Scotland are initially analysed via an internal report which highlights School, Local Authority, the date the event was created and the scheduled encounter date. The number of Student-Employer Encounters (SEE) is also shown; this is calculated by multiplying the class size attending the encounter by the number of speakers. Only encounters which have the status ‘confirmed’, ‘finalized’ or ‘completed’ are included. SEE are then aggregated by Local Authority (LA), by Month [using Date Created].
The number of Volunteers recruited via the Hunter Foundation is highlighted and also those volunteers who have confirmed their attendance at an Encounter. The SEE figure (class size attending the encounter multiplied by the number of speakers), number of Business Leaders (Speakers at an encounter) and the number of young people affected (those attending the encounters) are shown, using the same encounter status filters as described above.
The SEE totals are then weighted, by Pupil population. Pupil population by LA utilises data for Primary and Secondary Schools taken from the September 2016 Pupil Census, Scottish Government Learning Directorate. A minimum age of 8 is applied to the School population data. College data is taken from ‘SFC, Infact database - Analysis of Further Education Awards for year 2015-16’. Only students aged 16-19 are included for these 25 colleges. A total for all of Scotland is created then this sum is allocated across the 32 Local Authorities in the same proportion as their school populations, for example the Shetland Islands have 0.5% of Scottish Primary and Secondary pupils and are therefore allocated 0.5% of College pupils. The reason for this approach is that using the College address would disproportionately represent a handful of the 32 LAs (where the colleges are located) and many other LAs would not score on this measure.
